This is a voluntary scheme of eco-management and auditing aimed at any type of organisation, regardless of their size and activity, which was promoted by the European Union and defined in Regulation (EC) No 1221/2009 EMAS III.
In the same way as ISO 14001, EMAS proposes an efficient system to help organisations manage and continuously improve their environmental work. However, as well as including and requiring compliance with all the requirements of the ISO 14001 standard, EMAS contains additional requirements such as:
Identification of the environmental aspects derived from the activity of the company and above all those that are not controlled.
Those aimed at providing more worker involvement in establishing environmental objectives and targets.
Those that take into account how the organisation can attend the information needs of the stakeholders (customers, local groups, financial institutions, society, etc.)
One vital factor that distinguishes EMAS from other environmental management systems, such as ISO 14001, is the periodical supply of environmental information, through an Environmental Declaration.
As there is a Public Registry of the European companies subscribed to EMAS that is managed by the European Commission, EMAS provides increased business possibilities in the community area, in response to the growing demand from companies in seeking a reliable and recognised guarantee of good environmental management from their suppliers and offering the same in turn to their customers.
As well as improving their environmental management, among other advantages, the organisations will have the possibility of enhancing their business image, obtaining greater credibility and trust in the eyes of the public authorities, shareholders, employees and customers, increasing their business in the community area, and new business opportunities in markets with the green purchasing process.
As an environmental verifier accredited by ENAC, AENOR can validate the environmental declarations of the companies that wish to be registered in Regulation (EC) No 1221/2009 EMAS III.
AENOR's Environmental Management Mark is compatible with compliance with the requirements specified in the EMAS, thus giving important advantages to the companies as the environmental management system has been shown to comply with practically all the requirements of the Regulation.
