  General Rules on the Certification AENOR Mark    276,3 KB

 AENOR Medio Ambiente for products or services

This is a mark that shows compliance with UNE ecological standards, designed to distinguish those products or services that have the least impact on the environment during their life cycle: the raw materials used; design; manufacture; use and disposal after use.

The AENOR Medio Ambiente environmental mark provides consumers with information on the environmental aspects of the products and services available on the market.

The AENOR certification process for obtaining the AENOR Medio Ambiente environmental mark

The stages in granting the mark are:

Application
Interested companies must present the application to AENOR by filling in the form provided by AENOR.

Inspection
The AENOR technical services visit the applicant's facilities, where a number of ecological requisites are verified. Also, if necessary, a sample of the product is taken.

Carrying Out the Tests
The tests specified by the ecological standard are carried out at an independent laboratory.

Evaluation
Once the documentation and the inspection and laboratory reports have been studied, the Environmental Technical Certification Committee decides whether or not to grant the right to use the mark.

Award
The final result is the concession of the certificate, which states that the product or service complies with the standard and thereby grants the right to use the corresponding mark, which, from this moment on, may be used on the certified products and services.

Monitoring
Once the right to use the mark has been granted to a product or service, it is then subject to regular checks in the factory and on the market, in order to ensure that the ecological requisites are still being met.

Establishment of ecological criteria

The ecological criteria are the requisites that a product or service must meet in order to receive the AENOR Medio Ambiente environmental mark and which are defined in the corresponding UNE Standards.

They are established through the following process:

Selecting the Product Category
The mark is aimed at consumer products, excluding food, drink, and pharmaceutical products.

Evaluating environmental impact
This evaluation aims to determine the point at which the greatest environmental impact is produced, whether this be due to the existence of toxic substances, polluting emissions, or other reasons.
Consequently, the whole product life cycle needs to be examined, including manufacture, distribution, use, and disposal. The impact of these stages is evaluated on three mediums: air, water, and soil.

Establishment of ecological criteria
Once the most significant environmental effects have been identified along with the stage in the life cycle in which they are produced, the ecological criteria may then be established.

 Global Ecolabelling Network (GEN)

The Global Ecolabelling Network (GEN), brings together the ecolabelling systems of its members from over 20 countries.

The main aims of the Global Ecolabelling Network are:

  • to create a working framework of continual information exchange among bodies that have and grant ecolabels, including the establishment of a database of ecological criteria;
  • to provide information on ecolabelling programmes essentially to companies, ecologists, and consumers;
  • to move towards the harmonisation of ecological programmes;
  • to provide information to developing programmes.
