Standardization
THE NEW ISO 9001:2008 ALREADY AVAILABLE
The new version of ISO 9001, the quality management system standard more widely implemented in the world, is already published.
Since it was first published back in 1987, ISO 9001 has been reviewed in several occasions in order for it to adapt to the reality of companies at all times. Thus, in 2000, it was considered necessary to include changes to its structure that would enable to illustrate the management approaches and improve common organisational practices.
Five years after the version of that year was published, the countries represented within the quality management and quality assurance committee of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), ISO/TC 176, were asked whether these standards should be confirmed, modified or withdrawn. It was decided that the standard should be modified but only to include changes that would involve greater advantages for institutions adopting it.
The Spanish Translation Task Group, international group within ISO/TC 176 the secretariat of which is held by AENOR, has worked very hard for the Spanish version of this new document to be available at the same time as the English and French versions.
Compatible documents
Ever since the revision process of UNE-EN ISO 9001 started, changes have been mainly aimed at improving its clarity, facilitating its translation and use and to enhancing the consistency of the document vis-à-vis the ISO 9000 family and to strengthening its compatibility with ISO 14001:2004 on environmental management.
Thus, the new ISO 9001:2008 does not include new additional requirements with regard to the 2000 version, but clarifies requirements specified in the previous text. The editorial changes have led to the proposed revision of the Technical Specification for the automotive sector ISO/TS 16949:2002 and of the ISO 9001:2000 handbook for Small Businesses. This way, the alignment between both documents and the new ISO 9001:2008 continues to be ensured.
